AUDA-NEPAD SANWATCE partners attend SASSCAL Graduate Studies Programme on IWRM Symposium in Windhoek, Namibia, 11-12 November 2025

The SASSCAL (Southern African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management) is hosted by NUST (Namibia University of Science and Technology, and supported by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space. The Graduate Studies Programme on IWRM of SASSCAL symposium was convened from 11-12 November 2025. SANWATCE partners, Universities of Zambia, Malawi and Botswana, attended and contributed to the programme.

AUDA-NEPAD SANWATCE partners engages at annual WaterNet/WARFSA/GWP-SA symposium in Lusaka, 28-31 October 2025

All 11 partners attended and actively engaged at this annual symposium. Several emerging scholars and researchers working on the ACEWATER III projects presented their respective research. The Unit for Environmental Ethics at Stellenbosch University, in collaboration with NUST Zimbabwe convened a special session on transboundary water ethics, which was attended by 20 participants. The AUDA-NEPAD SANWATCE secretariat convened a special session on the review of the SADC Water Research Agenda, which was attended by about 50 participants. Dr Patrice Kabeya, the Senior Programme Officer for Water at the SADC Secretariat welcomed the audience and set the scene for the session.

The SANWATCE Secretariat and Stellenbosch Univeristy Water Institute also co-convened two special sessions related to the WASANet project (Water Security in Africa).

AUDA-NEPAD SANWATCE used the opportunity to also convene its annual network consultative meeting.

Zambezi Watercourse aquifer systems: State of knowledge and future research

In this presentation, Prof Kawawa Banada from the University of Zambia shares information on the state of knowledge and future research within aquifer systems within the Zambezi Watercourse in Southern Africa.

Information relates to:

  1. The Zambezi River Basin Overview;
  2. Key Environmental and social Challenges (not exhaustive);
  3. How much water is available in the Zambezi Basin?
  4. Water allocation at Basin level (Based on WA+ 2003-2023)
  5. Changes in forest cover and restoration potential
  6. What do you know about the aquifers?

Secretariat invited to the SADC Resource Mobilisation and Transboundary Water Investment Workshop Lusaka, Zambia 24-25 July 2025

The secretariat for AUDA-NEPAD SANWATCE was invited by the SADC Water Division and GWP-SA (Global Water Partners – Southern Africa) to represent the AUDA-NEPAD Water CoEs and to present on the progress of the SADC Water Research Agenda II review.

In support of the Regional Strategic Action Plan on Integrated Water Resources Management and Development (RSAP V: 2021- 2025), the SADC Water Division, with technical and financial backing from GIZ through the Transboundary Water Management (TWM) programme, is developing a draft RSAP Resource Mobilisation Plan. This consultative workshop brought together member states, RBOs (River Basin Organisations), and international cooperating partners. The Government of Zambia hosted the workshop through the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation. Prof Kawawa Banda at the University of Zambia, a partner of AUDA-NEPAD SANWATCE, was also in attendance.

With the support of the ACEWATER III project, funded by the European Union, the secretariat attended this workshop.

The University of Zambia Integrated Water Resource Management Centre produce most post-graduates since its inception

The University of Zambia Integrated Water Resources Management Centre graduated 14 post-graduates on 21st May, 2025.

This cohort represents the highest number of graduates since inception in 2006. The unit is not only a Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Management but also hosts the research chair in Water Conservation. Besides it’s national significance, the Centre is also a Centre of Excellence withing the AUDA NEPAD Southern African Network of Water Centres of Excellence (SANWATCE). The Centre is a flagship programme representing the University of Zambia’s strong research profile in Water related issues. The Unit is led by Prof. Kawawa Banda, who is also the focal point for the AUDA NEPAD SANWATCE.

Complementary access to the 24th WaterNet Special Issue article collection

The 24th WaterNet Physics and Chemistry of the Earth Special Issue article collection is now available on the journal webpage (https://www.sciencedirect.com/special-issue/10P416RCTD2).  The publisher, Elservier, has granted Network members a  one month complimentary access to this Special Issue with immediate effect.

Please  note that  we are still receiving submissions to the 25th WaterNet
Special Issue up to 30th June 2025.

Centres of Excellence contribute towards the implementation of the roadmap to formulate the post-2025 Africa Water Vision and Policy (AWV&P)

The AUDA-NEPAD Networks of Water Centers of Excellence are honored to partner with the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) to contribute towards the implementation of the roadmap to formulate the post-2025 Africa Water Vision and Policy (AWV&P).

This year marks a significant milestone, as the African Union Commission (AUC) and AMCOW accelerate efforts to develop the post-2025 Africa Water Vision and Policy (AWV&P).

Through the ACEWATER III project, the first basin-wide groundwater flow model of the Zambezi River basin has been produced

As part of the ACEWATER III project, the University of Zambia, with Prof Kawawa Banda as the lead, has produced this first basin-wide groundwater flow model of the Zambezi River Basin, using Feflow. The model can be used as a quantitative tool to conduct spatial exploratory analysis.
