Short course trainings at Addis Ababa University (Institute of Water Environment and Climate Research) on Emergency WASH and Earth Observation for Transboundary Water Resources Management

The Institute of Water Environment and Climate Research at Addis Ababa University offered two short course trainings in August 2025. The first training was on Emergency Wash from 19-22 August 2025 aimed at professionals managing disasters who needed critical skills to design, coordinate and evaluate life-saving WASH interventions during disasters. This course had 30 in-person and 55 virtual trainees.

The second course was hosted from 25-29 August 2025 on Earth Observation for Transboundary Water Resources Management, which attracted 30 in-person and over 30 virtual participants together, including those from ACEWATER III partner institutions.

The research and capacity development activities are undertaken within the framework of the ACEWATER III project, which is funded by the European Commission.

Centres of Excellence contribute towards the implementation of the roadmap to formulate the post-2025 Africa Water Vision and Policy (AWV&P)

The AUDA-NEPAD Networks of Water Centers of Excellence are honored to partner with the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) to contribute towards the implementation of the roadmap to formulate the post-2025 Africa Water Vision and Policy (AWV&P).

This year marks a significant milestone, as the African Union Commission (AUC) and AMCOW accelerate efforts to develop the post-2025 Africa Water Vision and Policy (AWV&P).

Building capacity though the Africa Doctoral Academy and the ACEWATER III project

As part of the research and capacity development activities in the ACEWATER III project, five post-graduate students and staff from three AUDA-NEPAD Water centres of excellence attended courses offered by the Africa Doctoral Academy (ADA). The courses were offered between 22 January 2025 and 7 February 2025 and offered at Stellenbosch, South Africa The following colleagues attended courses across three weeks.

GORILLA conference attendance by AUDA-NEPAD Water Centres of Excellence funded by ACEWATER III project (African Centres of Excellence in Water)

Between 27 November 2024 – 6 December 2024, partners in the ACEWATER III project participated in three events, as part of the GORILLA (Geographical Science for Resilient Communities, Ecosystems and Livelihoods under Global Environmental Change) conference in Kampala, Uganda. The events were hosted by Makerere University.

Africa Water Week 2025, Cairo, Egypt: 21 universities to tackle Africa’s water, sanitation hurdles

The African Union is partnering with 21 African universities to tackle and provide sustainable solutions for Africa’s water challenges and climate resilience. Discussions are under way for a new African water vision and policy framework.

Representatives of these academic institutions joined over 1,500 participants, including political leaders, technical experts and civil society members at the 9th Africa Water Week Conference in Cairo, Egypt, earlier in October 2024.

The event, organised by the African Ministers’ Council on Water, was themed ‘Placing water and sanitation at the heart of achieving the African Union’s Agenda 2063: The Africa we want’. Discussions at the conference form the foundation for the new African water vision and policy framework, emphasising inclusive water security.
