Centres of Excellence contribute towards the implementation of the roadmap to formulate the post-2025 Africa Water Vision and Policy (AWV&P)

The AUDA-NEPAD Networks of Water Centers of Excellence are honored to partner with the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) to contribute towards the implementation of the roadmap to formulate the post-2025 Africa Water Vision and Policy (AWV&P).

This year marks a significant milestone, as the African Union Commission (AUC) and AMCOW accelerate efforts to develop the post-2025 Africa Water Vision and Policy (AWV&P).

Through a series of Sub-regional Ministerial Committee (SMC) meetings and consultations and the third African Implementation Partners Conference on Water (PANAFCON-3), academia from the AUDA-NEPAD Water Centres of Excellence will participate and contribute towards the post-2025 Africa Water Vision and Policy.

The consultations involve a broad range of stakeholders, with regional meetings planned to take place in Tanzania, Morocco, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Equatorial Guinea during March 2025. In addition, the contributions from consultations will culminate in a draft AWV&P for consideration at PANAFCON-3 in May 2025 under the theme “Assuring inclusive and climate-resilient water security and sanitation for the Africa We Want” in Lusaka, Zambia.

At the recent East Africa Subregional Ministerial Committee (SMC) Meeting in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania between 4 to 6 March2025, Prof Zeleke Agide from Addis Ababa University and Prof Yazidhi Bamutaze from Makerere University represented the AUDA-NEPAD Central/East African Network of Water Centres of Excellence. Ms Rennie Munyayi from the Namibia University of Science and Technology and a member of the AUDA-NEPAD Southern African Network of Water Centres of Excellence (SANWATCE), also participated in the meeting. Ms Munyayi is also a sherpa for the “Gender equality and social inclusion” workstream.

In addition, Prof Awa Niang-Fall from Cheikh Anta Diop University, Dr. Martin Eduvie, Nigeria National Water Resources Institute, Prof. Geoffrey Anornu from the Kwame Nkrumah University for Sciences and Technology – Ghana and Dr. Bassirou Boube from 2iE in Burkina Faso attended the West Africa Subregional Ministerial Committee (SMC) Meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, between 17 and 19 March 2025.

During the 2025 Statutory meeting for Southern Africa and regional consultation on the post-2025 Africa Water Vision and Policy between 24-26 March 2025, in Harare, Zimbabwe, various colleagues from the AUDA-NEPAD Southern African Network of Water CoE’s also participated in the deliberations. At this gatehring, Dr. Joel Kabiba (University of Zambia), Dr. Nico Elema (Secretariat Stellenbosch University), Dr Thinah Moyo (Namibia University of Science and Technology), Dr. Langa Moyo (Zimbabwe National University of Science and Technology), Dr. Deejaysing Jogee (University of Mauritius), Prof. Joao Mutondo (University of Eduardo Mondlane), and Dr. Evance Mwathunga (University of Malawi) contributed to the deliberations. In addition, the research partners had the opportunity to engage with their individual representatives of National ministries and also River Basin Organisations.

The AUDA-NEPAD Networks of Water Centres of Excellence are mandated by the African Ministers of Water (AMCOW) and Science-and Technology (AMCOST). The contributions to the implementation of the roadmap to formulate the post-2025 Africa Water Vision and Policy (AWV&P) are part of the ACEWATER-III project.
