In this presentation, Prof Kawawa Banada from the University of Zambia shares information on the state of knowledge and future research within aquifer systems within the Zambezi Watercourse in Southern Africa.
Information relates to:
- The Zambezi River Basin Overview;
- Key Environmental and social Challenges (not exhaustive);
- How much water is available in the Zambezi Basin?
- Water allocation at Basin level (Based on WA+ 2003-2023)
- Changes in forest cover and restoration potential
- What do you know about the aquifers?
In summary:
The Zambezi groundwater strategy must consider
- Ensuring professionalism in data collection (e.g. through borehole completion standards and mandatory orientation courses for drillers and development of a drilling school in the region)
- Adopt technologies to support groundwater recharge in the wake of climate impacts (e.g. MAR or map strategic aquifers).
- Recharge areas must be protected. We need to understand Forest-Water-Climate nexus.
- Monitoring of groundwater through mapping strategic aquifers to support joint surveys
- Basement aquifers are still poorly understood in terms of connectivity and potential (improve data sharing and use of this data)
- Sustainable utilisation of groundwater requires diagnostic analysis
