Zambia: Ndola Water Plant Rehab Starts

KAFUBU Water and Sewerage Company has commenced the rehabilitation of the Kafubu water treatment plant in Ndola.

The rehabilitation works are being undertaken as part of phase two of a project funded by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) worth US$25 million.

Under phase two, Kafubu is expected to install a raw water pump, filter inlet valves, pre- and post-chlorinators, replacement of air blowers, back wash pumps and sedimentation pumps, as well as reconditioning of alum dosing pumps.

Works are being carried out by a Japanese contractor, Koinike Construction while the consultant firm is Sanyu Consultants from Japan.

Kafubu Water public relations officer Margaret Zulu confirmed the commencement of the project, saying the appointment of contractors was done by the funding agency, JICA.

Ms Zulu said the project was aimed at improving service delivery to the clientele in Ndola and outlaying areas.

“The project will also lay pipes and construct additional water kiosks in Koloko Township as a way of improving water supply in the area,” she said.

Ms Zulu said the improvement of water supply condition project commenced with phase one in March this year.

Under phase one of the project, the utility company had been replacing the age old Nakaputa concrete pipe with a steel pipe.

While the rehabilitation works were going on, the treatment plant would not be operating at full capacity which would see an erratic supply of water in Mine Masala, Main Masala, Skyways, Itawa, Mushili, Lubuto, Ndeke, Commando, Kaloko and the industrial area.
