Zambia: Livingstone Sanitation Deal Sealed

GOVERNMENT has signed contracts with two local firms to construct public lavatories in Livingstone in readiness for the August 2013 United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) General Assembly.

Southern Province Permanent Secretary Chileshe Mulenga said the Government had signed contracts with Mwanza Construction and Anita Construction firms to construct public lavatories in the tourist capital.

Speaking in an interview yesterday, Dr Mulenga said the construction of lavatories was expected to start soon to prepare the city for the UNWTO conference.

“We have signed contracts for the construction of public lavatories in Livingstone and construction will start soon ahead of the UNWTO conference,” he said.

On the construction of the ultra-modern market and an intercity bus terminus, Dr Mulenga said the province had been allowed to invite proposals from a selected number of consulting and construction firms.

“Consulting and construction firms have been allowed to give us proposals by the end of January after which construction works will start,” he said.

During the fourth quarter of last year, the Livingstone City Council received more than KR6.5 million or K6.5 billion from Government to construct ablution blocks as well as an ultra modern market and an intercity bus terminus to prepare the city for this year’s UNWTO General Assembly.

More than KR1 million or K1 billion would be used for the construction of three ablution blocks at the Civic Centre, Victoria Hall area and at Mukuni Park.

The council also received KR3 million or K3 billion for the construction of an intercity bus terminus and also received KR2.5 million or K2.5 billion for the construction of an ultra-modern market.

So far, Livingstone Town Centre Market also popularly known as Zimbabwe market has been demolished to pave way for the construction of an ultra-modern market.

It is encouraging to hear of all the developments and progress in preparation for Zambia and Livingstone in particular to host the UNWTO General Assembly.
Thumbs up to all the people planning and undertaking the construction and other cardinal aspects.
May I also suggest that the local and water authorities in Livingstone consider installing Prepaid Water Meters. We have a company called Zambia Electrometer which is manufacturing Prepaid Water and Electricity Meters, right here in Zambia and their products are of the highest standard. The products come with technical installation and back up service.
I am proud to be an agent of this company and very much willing to facilitate any transactions. The company also produces genuine and durable CFL’s commonly known as Energy Saver Bulbs.
Be Patriotic and support Zambia by buying Zambian goods.
