RESIDENTS of Kisauni Street in Zanzibar have raised concern over increasing littering of the area, with used diapers, asking municipal authorities to take disciplinary measures against polluters.
“We are putting ourselves in danger of contracting diseases such as diarrhoea and dysentery, among others, through reckless dumping of pampers. People should stop this unhealthy habit,” Ms Fatma Hassan lamented.
Pampers, a diaper or a nappy is a kind of disposable underwear used by children and sick elderly people that allows one to defecate or urinate in a discreet manner.
Apart from the used diaper, residents in Zanzibar have been also complaining about careless disposing or throwing of used condoms and used pads (Always).
Zanzibar Municipal Council authorities have been asking residents in Zanzibar to abandon the habit of littering the area.
“In fact Zanzibar municipality is dirty due to people who do not want to observe cleanliness.
If people change their behaviour including proper disposal of litter, our town will remain clean,” said Dr Mwinyihaji Makame Mwadini, State minister responsible for local governments.
