Sierra Leone: Cholera Outbreak! Health Coalition Calls for National Cleaning

The Director of Health for All Coalition has called on the government to declare a national cleaning exercise for the Freetown municipality and district headquarter towns countrywide to promote sanitation for all.

Charles Mambu told newsmen at his Fort Street office yesterday that government ministries, departments and agencies should support the call for a total involvement in the fight against the cholera disease.

“Cholera does not respect any authority or the status of anyone. Join us and our partners to eliminate it from our country. We call on the government to declare a two-day national cleaning of our capital city and other cities of the country including district headquarter towns,” he said citing that 13,382 people have already been reported affected by the cholera disease and 229 deaths recorded nationwide as of August 26th, according to information from the Disease Prevention and Control Department in the Ministry of Health and Sanitation.

Mambu added that his coalition is ready to support the government to combat and eradicate cholera in the country as they cannot sit and watch the disease destroy the lives of innocent people.

“The filthiness of the city and the proliferation of the so-called packet water companies are the major causes of the cholera outbreak. Our coalition and partners will be launching the ‘Kick Cholera Komot Na Salone Campaign’ tomorrow. We are calling on organizations to come out and march against cholera,” he urged.
