Ms Juanita During, the Nigerian Head of Policy, Advocacy and Partnership at the African Centre for Water and Sanitation (CREPA) in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, died yesterday at a Burkina Faso hospital after a brief illness.
A rising star with international development agencies, During was head of governance at WaterAid in Nigeria before she was posted to CREPA Ouagadougou. Before then, she was at UNICEF for seven years.
She joined WaterAid in 2008, serving on the Nigerian government’s high level inter-ministerial committee on MDGs.
The body was responsible for leading and co-ordinating the preparation of Nigeria’s 2010 report for the UN MDG Summit, as well as producing the DFID-supported flagship Five Year Countdown Strategy to accelerate Nigeria’s progress towards the 2015 goals.
Before WaterAid, Juanita previously spent seven years with UNICEF in Nigeria. She also worked with Afri-projects Consortium between 1995 and 1999. Afri-projects was the programme manager of the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF).
She is survived by two brothers and two sisters. Her remains, expected to arrive Nigeria in the coming week, would be buried in Lagos.
