Nigeria: Flood – ‘Dasin Hausa Dam Solution to Lagdo Dam Problem’

The Foundation for Public-Public Partnerships, Nigeria on Wednesday in Abuja said since Nigeria cannot stop Cameroun Republic from releasing excess water from its Lagdo dam which always washes away Nigerian communities, construction of Dasin Hausa Dam is the best option.

The foundation led by Engr. Saidu Njidda decried what it termed insensitivity of both the federal and Adamawa State governments to the plight of the people saying government’s action is always non sustainable.

Njidda who is indigene of Adamawa State, expressed, “I pray that the president, His Excellency Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan will direct the use of subsidy removal fund (SU RE) belonging to these sates in order to implement this laudable project or any other source of funding the project.”

At this time of the year, Cameroon always releases water which its Lagdo dam cannot hold causing flooding and loss of lives and property in communities of Adamawa and adjoining states of Borno, Taraba and Benue.

The Hausa Dasin dam project that was conceived in 1982 is expected to if completed tackle the perennial flooding, provide the whole North-east arable land of about 150,000 hectares thereby providing crop tonnage of 790,000 tons in Adamawa, Taraba and Benue States. It will also shore up employment opportunities to about 40,000 families and make available navigation route of the Benue River to Niger Delta.

Site for the Dasin Hausa multi-purpose dam which is expected to provide power of about 300mw is in Dasin village of Fufore local government area of Adamawa State.

Njidda said this project is known to the federal ministry of water resources and efforts to bring on board private investors is thwarted by government’s bureaucracy.
