Nigeria: EU, Wateraid Tackle Water Problems in Enugu

Enugu — The European Union, EU, and WaterAid Nigeria in collaboration with Enugu State Government have provided six rural communities in the state with potable water.

The humanitarian organisations sank two motorised boreholes each in three local governments of the state selected for the first phase of the water project tagged, ‘closing the gap’. The water projects are to help the benefiting communities key in into the Millenium Development Goals, MDG.

The benefiting communities are two communities each from three local government areas of Nkanu East, Igbo-Etiti and Udenu.

The communities have never had potable water supply since the founding of the world and all the past governments at both state and local council levels have neglected them. The dearth of water forced the communities to source water from caves, streams and rain water.

To save these communities from sanitary degradation and improve their hygienic condition, the WaterAid, in collaboration with EU and the Enugu State Government, decided to provide them with motorized boreholes equipped with generators and overhead water tanks.
