The rural town near Empangeni has allegedly been without water and without access to a water tanker for months, but on Wednesday afternoon, a tanker finally arrived.
The Siyazisiza Trust field worker and Jozini resident Jabu Nxumalo said frustration over the missing water tankers had reached a boiling point on Wednesday morning, with residents blockading the road leading to and from the town.
“The people want the municipality to assist and have not seen a water tanker in almost a year.
“If we want water, we have to hire a truck and drive down to the Jozini Dam to fetch water, but the water has made a few people sick, with some displaying cholera-like symptoms,” she said.
After the protests, the Trust reported that a water tanker had arrived and finally supplied water to the community.
uMkhanyakude District Municipal spokesperson Mduduzi Dlamini said claims of Jozini not receiving water via water tankers for almost a year were “incorrect”.
“We do have water tankers that we have hired to go into Jozini and other areas to provide them with water.
“Jozini has very poor water infrastructure. In 2011, the municipality started a few water projects that will see the improvement of the water infrastructure,” he said.
Dlamini said the first project was already 75% completed, with the other project sitting at 50%.
