Ghana: AMA Fulfills Pledge to Waste Management Contractors.

press release

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) presented a cheque of six hundred thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢ 600,000.00) to the operators of the landfill site in Accra.

This was done in fulfillment of a pledge the AMA made two weeks ago when they first issued a cheque of GH¢600,000.00 to the waste management contractors.

On the 22nd May, 2014, the AMA issued a cheque of Six Hundred Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢ 600,000.00) to the waste management contractors as part payment of debt owed them. The Assembly had been indebted to the waste management contractors to the tune of 2.2million Ghana Cedis before the introduction of the Polluter Pay Principle.

In total, AMA has paid an amount of GH¢1.2million to the waste management contractors to enable them work diligently.

Presenting the cheque to the Waste Land Field Company Limited at a press conference at the AMA head office, Hon. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, the Mayor of Accra said the AMA recognised the indebtedness to the contractors and in order for them to have a strong financial backing to work, the amount that had to be paid was in line with the pledge the AMA made two weeks previously.

He said the AMA in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development expected the land field site to be opened for the dumping of refuse.

The Mayor appealed to the media to hold the landfill operators responsible any time the city of Accra was littered with rubbish. Mr Peter Dagadu, the General Manager of Waste Land Fields Company Limited the operators of landfill site at Kpone on receiving the cheque thanked the AMA for honoring its pledge and expressed profound gratitude to the Mayor for making waste disposal a priority.

He assured Ghanaians that the land field site would be opened from 6am-3pm during the day shift and 8pm-2am during the night shift from Monday to Sunday.
