WASANet (Water Security in Africa) Summer School preceding the WaterNet/WARFSA/GWP-SA Symposium in Lusaka, 24-27 October 2025

WASANet used the annual WaterNet Symposium to convene an intensive two-week training beforehand, in collaboration with WaterNet. The training was attended by 40 emerging scholars from several SADC countries. The University of Zambia, in particular, Prof Kawawa Banda co-hosted the training.

Dr Nico Elema at the AUDA-NEPAD SANWATCE Secretariat presented on Science Diplomacy in the Water Sector. Prof Cosmo Ngongondo at the University of Malawi taught on Scientific Paper Writing, while Dr Marelize Botes at the Stellenbosch University Water Institute presented on Case Studies on Contaminants of Emerging Concern: Innovations in Effect-Based Impact Assessment on Environmental and Human Health and Removal Technologies.

IGAD ICPAC in Kenya visited the Institut Geographic du Burundi (IGEBU), Lake Tanganyika Authority, TAKIWAMA and Enabel

A team of two staff from ICPAC carried out field visits to key stakeholders in Burundi from 11-13 November 2025. The stakeholders included Institut Geographique du Burundi (IGEBU), Lake Tanganyika Authority, TAKIWAMA (Tanganyika Kivu Water Management Project) and Enabel, to discuss issues related to lake water management. This visit will inform the activities of Lake Tanganyika water balance modelling.

The objectives of the field visit were to:


Inform stakeholders about the intention of ICPAC of developing a water balance model for Lake Tanganyika under the research component of the ACE Water III project,
Consult stakeholders about water uses, on-going projects and any challenges/issues within the Lake Tanganyika basin
Collect all available datasets and reports relevant to the development of Lake Tanganyika model

AUDA-NEPAD SANWATCE partners attend AWSISA Africa and Global South Water and Sanitation Dialogue 2025, 9-12 November in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The University of the Western Cape the Stellenbosch attended AWSISA dialoque. This three-day event brought together over 1500 delegates from across the world. This dialogue was the perfect opportunity for young professionals in various industries to learn about the water and sanitation sector, but also to gain mentorship from industry leaders. A post-graduate student at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa presented her ACEWATER III-related research.

AUDA-NEPAD SANWATCE partners attend SASSCAL Graduate Studies Programme on IWRM Symposium in Windhoek, Namibia, 11-12 November 2025

The SASSCAL (Southern African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management) is hosted by NUST (Namibia University of Science and Technology, and supported by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space. The Graduate Studies Programme on IWRM of SASSCAL symposium was convened from 11-12 November 2025. SANWATCE partners, Universities of Zambia, Malawi and Botswana, attended and contributed to the programme.

Short course training on IWRM offered by NUST Zimbabwe, 3-6 November 2025

The National University of Science and Technology in Zimbabwe offered a training on Integrated Water Resources Management from 3-6 November. Collaborative teaching took place with the Zimbabwe National Water Authority, presenting on water governance issues, while Stellenbosch University Unit for Environmental Ethics presented on transboundary water ethics. The course was attended by 40 participants.
