The National Water Resources Institute (NWRI), Kaduna Nigeria, through the AUDA-NEPAD Centre of Excellence under its ACEWATER III Human Capacity Development Programme, successfully conducted a ten-day training programme on the theme “Groundwater Exploitation and Management” from 27th April to 8th May 2025.
The training commenced with an opening ceremony graced by the Director General of the Institute. It was specifically designed to build and strengthen the capacity of participants in the critical area of groundwater exploitation and sustainable management.

A total of twenty-seven participants drawn from various stakeholder institutions across Nigeria took part in the training. The resource persons were experts from diverse fields relevant to the course content, bringing a wealth of experience and practical knowledge to the sessions.
The training methodology combined classroom lectures, hands-on practicals, brainstorming sessions, group presentations, fieldwork and site visits. Participants were engaged in on-site fieldwork, including trips to locations where groundwater levels were monitored, geophysical investigation, static water level measurements and meteorological readings were taken. At the close of the programme, all participants were formally presented with certificates of participation by the African Centre of Excellence Manager and the Acting Director General of the National Water Resources Institute, Kaduna, Dr. Martin O Eduvie.

The training was widely regarded as impactful, timely, and well-organised, contributing significantly to capacity development in groundwater, exploration , development and management across participating institutions in Nigeria.
The research and capacity development activities are undertaken within the framework of the ACEWATER III project, which is funded by the European Commission.
